Question
QUESTION: I just had a mammogram, and the radiologist as well as the head of radiology examined three past films, 2005,2007 and this month's 2008.  All 3 films have shown no changes regarding the nodules.  I have sharp pain in the inside of my breast close to the breastbone, at rest or movement, there is pain and sometimes I have sharp pains going through my breast.  The sharp pain inside my breast is steady.  It does not go away.  I am worried because the doctor did not do a diagnostic ultrasound and feels it is not necessary.  Now I am without insurance and going overseas next month to work.

Is the pain normal? Shuldn't the radiologists required the diagnostic ultrasound?

ANSWER: If there are NO changes any risks are very small! The symptoms you describe are hardly associated with breast cancer.Good luck!

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The pain is so regular, that I do not know who to approach about it.  No, there are no changes in the films of the 3 yrs including present date.

Should I just see if it will go away as the doctor does not feel an ultrasound is necessary?

I am a forensic chemist going to lecture in Korea, and I leave in a month.

Answer
While I'm not against an ultrasound breast scan or even an MRI breast scan for that matter I do not think such scans can contribute much in this situation. Your symptoms most probably are not associated with any tumor at all. I suggest that you discuss your symptoms with your gynecologist who probably is the best person available for trying to take care of your problem. Even though such symptoms only very rarely may be associated with anything dangerous they are unfortunately still very difficult to treat. And the closest person you have that in any way can claim any expertise with regards to these problems is most probably your gynecologist. Good luck!

THANKS! Forensic chemist sounds interesting! If you check my bio page here you will find that I too have some forensic experience. Good luck in Korea and I do hope you will have nice time there!
