Question
Dr. Nordquist,
Thank you for this service.  Is it unusual to have two
different primary cancers?  In both cases, the cancers were
found accidently, either through an MRI and then a routine
mammogram.  Thankfully, everything was treatable with either
surgery or lympectomy plus radiation.  Does this put me at risk for other primary cancers or recurrence?
Sincerely,
Connie

Answer
These 2 cancers are completely unrelated. Such coincidences are unusual but they do happen sometimes. This does not in itself increase your risks from each of them but of course the fact that you have had 2 primary cancers does to some extent increase your total risk burden. Apart from that the presence of one breast cancer in your past - and of one kidney cancer - slightly increases your risk of a new cancer of the same kind.
A breast cancer MAY also slightly increase your risk of an ovarian cancer, but that is not certain. A slight increase of your risk of an endometrial uterine cancer is also possible. That is all that can be said.
