Breast Cancer - Breast MRI ?

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 10/10/2009

Question
Hello, do all nodules that enhance on breast MRI need to be biopsied? I had 8 with iregular borders enhance but the radiologist is only going to biopsy 2. He felt like if these two are benign the other 6 will be too. Is this a common practice? The radiologist said he did not want to turn me into a pin-cushion.  I am 38 years old . one sister with Cowdens syndrome she had ovarian cancer and then had breast cancer at 31 years old. I am on a list to be tested for Cowdens also. Thank you

Answer
Well if I happened to be in your situation (and in THIS situation) I would probably INSIST ON/DEMAND that biopsies should be done on all those lesions! That one lesion is benign is no guarantee that another also will be. Sure they may ALL be benign but then you will know that and do not need to worry. Last summer (2008) my PSA was found to be 8.8. My urologist - in a fancy private hospital in Stockholm, Sweden - told me he thought it was due to my old man's enlarged prostate and nothing else. I replied that sure that it may but I want to KNOW! So I more or less forced him to do 8 medium bore needle biopsies of my prostate (even though much enlarged probably smaller than your breast). Well there was cancer in 5 of them. I have since had radiation therapy for it and my PSA has gone down to 0.05! He looked like a wet cat when he had to tell me the results! Please do keep me posted! Good luck!
