Breast Cancer/possible lumpectomy

Question
Hello Doctor,
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.  I have had a breast lump for several years.  I recently had an ultrasound with the radiologist listing the size as 8X1.2cm at the 2o'clock position with a rating of 4.  He had stated an underlying malignancy is suspected and that it is a solid mass.  My general surgeon wants to remove it and do a biopsy.  I am considering getting a second opinion and requesting a needle biopsy before it is removed.  Is this a viable option or is removal the "standard" practice in cases like this?
Thank you again!
Kim

Answer
What is standard procedure is actually different in different places. I would definitely order a needle biopsy of your lesion if I was in charge. But if there was any uncertainty in the report I would order its removal even if it was thought to be benign. Good luck!
