Breast Cancer - ultrasound experience

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 10/17/2009

Question
I am 21 years old and noticed my right boob was getting much larger then the left. Started to notice it in March and since then it keeps increasing and is now a full cup size larger there is also a change in the outer part of my nipple. I went to the doctor and she felt a lump and said it was probably a cyst and it is very common in girls my age. she told me to get a ultrasound done and they would tell me if it needs to be drained or not.The doctor who performed my ultra sound didn't understand why I was there. She said she does not feel or see a lump and that one breast being bigger is normal. I know it is normal and I have always had one bigger then the other however this was a change in my breast that is not normal for me. I then asked about a blood test to see if I have the gene since my mom is adopted and she has no family history She made me feel like my questions were stupid. They won't give me a appointment to see the breast doctor there because they don't feel I have any good reason to see one and they won't give me the blood test because it is rare to have that gene.Am I overanalyzing the situation or should I be concerned and try to seek a second ultrasound?

Answer
I think you should have a second ultrasound. If that does not show anything either there is most probably nothing dangerous there. If you can feel a lump there a touch guided fine/thin needle aspiration biopsy could also be of value. At your age breast cancer is very rare while differences in breast size are rather common. If there is nothing dangerous there a gene search is of very doubtful value. Most breast cancers have nothing to do with those genes so far known. Good luck!
