Question
Hi Doc,

My sister (43 years) recently underwent an mammography and the results are furnished below

Report:

Craniocaudal and mediolateral oblique views of both breasts were studied.
Both breasts show glandular parenchyma
There is no evidence of mcrocalcification in both breasts.
Both nipples are not retracted.
There is no evidence of focal or diffuse thickening of skin or subcutaneous tissues of both breasts.
Retromammary spaces appear clear.
Right axillary node is seen.
On correlated ultrasound screeing 19x9 mm hypoechoic oval lesion with slightly irregular margins is seen in left upper outer quadrant ? fibroadeboma
No solid/cystic lesion is noted in right breast.

IMPRESSION:
?FIBROADENOMA IN LEFT BREAST (ON ULTRASOUND SCARRING)
* SUGGEST FNAC CORRELATION

What does the report suggest? we are very confused. please guide us.

Answer
The only lesions of interest seen are a probable fibroadenoma (a non cancerous lesion) in the upper left part of her left breast and a lymph node in her right axilla (arm pit). Her probable fibroadenoma was found by ultrasound scanning. Ultrasound scanning can probably find her axillary lymph node too. To make sure that these lesions are not dangerous (they probably are NOT) fine/thin needle aspiration (FNAC) biopsies are suggested. I agree! They can be done by ultrasound guidance. OR by palpation if these lesions can be felt. Good luck!
