Question
What is the proceedure when you have a breast biopsy in a breast MRI machine? How is the biopsy obtained? How long is the proceedure usually?
The MRI machine only guides the procedure. A hollow needle (like for an injection syringe but due to the procedure made of other materials is introduced into your breast under guidance from the MRI machine so that the needle hits the lesion of interest and a specimen of cells or of tissue is obtained in the needle for further microscopical studies by a pathologist. If there are no complications the procedure should not take long, around a number of minutes. There are no real pain problems either.
