Breast Cancer/Right breast lump

Question
Hi I recently had an ultrasound done on both breasts because I could feel two lumps in my right breast. One of the lumps could not be found on the ultrasound. The report came back as follows and I was wondering if you could explain to me what it means.

In the right breast at 12'oclock position 2cm from the nipple there is a 1x1x1cm hypoechoic lesion present. It shows marked lobulation, some posterior acoustic shadowing. Some peripheral vascularity is present. Some Atypical features are present.

They are sending me to see a breast surgeon and want the surgeon to do a ultrasound guided core biopsy. But my appointment to see this surgeon is a month away, and I do not understand what the report means.

Answer
In your right breast right above the nipple and 2 cm from the nipple (almost 1 inch) is a lobular lesion. It does not give much echo (ultrasound scans work like radar but with sound waves, here not much sound is reflected back) and not much sound reach behind this lesion (= creating a "shadow" or at least some of it). Blood vessels to it are seen and its features are somewhat atypical. I can not exclude the possibility that this may be a cancer. Neither could your dr. That is why a core biopsy to find out what it is is important. It is unfortunate that you will have to wait a month but probably in just a month not much will happen.
