Breast Cancer - biospsy right breast

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 5/24/2009

Question
I had a surgical biopsy on my right breast 2 weeks ago. Here is the pathology report. Breat tissue, including radiographically designated site, with stromal fibrosis, duct cell hyperplasia, focally with atypia (atypical duct cell hyperplasia), complex sclerosing lesion, cysts, adenosis, duct ectasia, apocrine metaplasia, fibroadenomata, chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate.
Microcalcification is identified in radiographically and non-radiographically designated sited and is associated with benign breast tissue.
I am 52 years old, with a history of breast cancer. Mom and aunt. I was told I have pre cancerous cells...does this mean I will eventually get cancer??  I was told to go for genetic counseling.  This will be an insurance issue..they don't cover it.  I am confused and worried. Not sure what to do. What do you think??  Thank you so much for your time.  Mary

Answer
Due to your family history you do have an increased RISK (genetic) of breast cancer but that is not a certainty. Your pathology report does NOT show any cancer! It does show some changes that at a later date MAY have developed into a cancer but that had not yet happened. And those changes have now been removed by your biopsy. I think the best thing for you is to continue to have regular breast check ups at least once per year including mammography, ultrasound breast scans, MRI breast scans and at least needle biopsies of anything unclear seen! Good luck!
