Question
I just got a call today telling me I've been diagnosed with moderately differentiated ductal infiltrating carcinoma. The tumor was measured as a 12mmx13mm mass. Whether it is ER+ is still pending. My Dr. has made referrals for a medical oncologist and a surgeon. With the tumor being so small, does that improve my prognosis? And what types of options are available to me and what is your opinion as to the best of those options?

Answer
Yes it does. Due to its small size a "lumpectomy" followed by radiation therapy will probably be suggested. If ER+ chemotherapy too will at least be considered as will hormonal therapy if hormone receptors are found in your tumor. A sentinel lymph node biopsy should also be done since this was an invasive cancer. If anything is found there more radiation therapy may be needed and chemotherapy SHOULD be given. I do not think more extensive surgery is necessary. These are the available options. Good luck!
