Question 1. In 1957, an East European writer stated "The Communist East European countries did not become satellites of the USSR because they benefited from it, but because they were too weak to prevent it. As soon as they became stronger, or as soon as favorable conditions were created, a yearning for independence and for protection of their own people from Soviet hegemony will rise among them...." What did that particular statement mean?
2. Are there any events since WWII which have tended to support that statement in question one?
Answer 1.It meant that they were bullied into that position by Soviet military might and inability or unwillingness of the West (or both) - and by their own weakness - to prevent it! 2. Oh, yes the moment the Soviet Union showed itself to be weak and too weak to prevent change the whole system crumbled and these countries made themselves free just as predicted in that sentence! That happened from 1989 to 1991!
So it took more than 30 years but it did happen!
