Breast Cancer - recent breast biopsy with precancerous cells

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/30/2009

Question
I have just returned from a follow up visit for results of my surgery done last friday to remove a lump from my right breast. The doctor stated that there were precancerous cells detected and stated a specific AR something?? I don't know if that catagorizes it but we have breast cancer in my family and within the last 6 months 2 cousins ages 51 and 49 rec'd masectomies.  I am 45.  This is my seventh lumpectomy and I never heard the precancerous words before.  My lumps never appear on mammograms or sonograms I find them on my own.  He stated that I could talk to an oncologist about tamoxifen, and I really don't know what to do?  I feel that I am obviously at risk because of the cells being present, and if I don't find these lumps the tests don't so is it a good precaution measure to take tamoxifen as a preventive.  I am really at a loss, can you please help me?

Answer
Well precancerous cells are NOT a cancer. They only had the possibility of maybe develop into one at some time in the future. But now they have been removed and can not do ANYTHING! However with your family history etc. you certainly are at risk. In your case I do recommend regular MRI breast scans in order to find any future tumor. I also think that tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor may be a very good idea in your case in order to decrease your breast cancer risks! Good luck!
