Breast Cancer/breast lump

Question
Dear Dr Nordquist,

I would like to hear your opinion on whether or not I should
pursue this matter further.
Couple of months ago I discovered an approx. 1.5 cm lump at
the bottom of my right breast, somewhere around a 5'clock
position. It seemed to get bigger with my periods and more
painful, but it was always present and painful to a degree.
Only palpable when lying down. I saw my family doctor who
agreed that a lump is indeed there and ordered a mammogram
and an ultrasound.
I got a call from my family doctors' office today telling me
that results came back and all looks clear without any
issues or problems. They wouldn't discuss anything beyond
that and said there's no reason to make a follow up
appointment on the matter. I would still like to know what
the lump is... from following on the ultrasound, it didn't
look like a cyst, though I've seen one or two cysts in the
breast and in axillary area.
From all the recent irritation, the lump seems to have
changed shape, became more round and prominent. What could
it be if not a cyst? Do you think I should approach another
doctor - can't see a specialist without my fam. dr. referral
and would rather not if it's not necessary. I'm 35 years
old. Thank You.

Answer
Well, it may for example be a fibroadenoma. At least you should be able to demand a straight answer to the question of what it is you have. To confirm what it really is you should also - I hope - be able to demand at least a needle biopsy of your lesion. That can in your case be done by touch or if seen either by mammography or ultrasound as a stereotactical needle biopsy or a ultrasound guided one. Good luck!
