Breast Cancer - New Lumps in Breasts & Burning Sensation

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 8/13/2009

Question
QUESTION: (I'm the same person in middle of determining if I truly have sarcoidosis or possible cancer...ulna tumor..etc)

In May I had discovered approx 2cm lump in right breast.  Sent for mammo & sono.  Radiologist said follow-up 3 mos or sooner if changes.  (Well I've been a bit consumed w/biopsies, tests, appts for enlarged chest nodes.)  In meantime, my breasts had started extreme burning sensations, even painful.  I noticed the node close to armpit in right breast larger & more painful.  Also 2 new lumps in left breast now -approx 1cm.  My breasts are definately larger, but I attribute it to 17 lbs I gained after Prednisone.  Anyways, could this possibly be related to sarcoid?  I tried to find info in regards to sarcoid & breast involvement, but there really isn't much.  I will be getting a follow-up mammo this month.  What are your thoughts/recommendations or your experience w/this type senario?  Thanks again for your help!

ANSWER: THANKS! Sorry, you will not like this. But ALL your breast lesions should be examined by needle biopsies (can be guided by touch when possible or stereotactically by your mammographies or by ultrasound or even MRI)! If done you will not have to run to the radiology department all the time for new examinations! It is POSSIBLE that there is a connection with your sarcoidosis but I can not promise that. This is especially important in this situation! Your mammographies should also be complemented with ultrasound & MRI breast scans since this is a complicated picture! Good luck!

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Dr N-
I went today for mammo & u.s.  Radiologist checked off "although your mammo./u.s. showed no abnormality, physical finding noted by your Physician requires follow up.  Please see your physician."  So what is best way to handle this?  When 1st lump was felt 3 mos ago & mammo/u.s. were neg.-doc sent me to surgeon, who said he didn't feel biopsy was necessary-"just follow-up w/next mammo".  It seems he was very passive & this makes me feel like I should just ignore that lump & new ones too (very tempting as I have so many other health issues I'm dealing with).  However my friend found pea-size lump, went through mammo/u.s. w/docs being passive & surgeon said "it's up to you..I think it's nothing, but if you want me to do biopsy for your piece of mind, I'll do it."  So she did & biopsy came back VERY aggressive type cancer.  Those kind of experiences make me nervous.  If surgeon refuses..do I just keep searching for one that will do it?  How does one go about making biopsies happen?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks-Jayne

P.S.- How are you doing?  Are you now cancer free?  I truly hope so.:)

Answer
Thanks! Well my PSA has gone down from 8.8 before my treatment to 0.05 now which indicates a good response to my radiation therapy. If I'm cancer free we will know in a time of 5 years not now. You DEMAND to have biopsies done! If necessary you get a "second opinion"!
