Breast Cancer - Breast US

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 9/1/2009

Question
I am 26 years old. A little over a month ago I noticed a painful lump on the outer portion of my right breast. I have fibrocystic breasts to begin with and I was about due for my period so I waited to see if the pain would subside with my period. It did, but the lump still stayed. Mind you, two weeks before I noticed this lump I had just had a breast exam at my annual with my ob/gyn and she noticed nothing. So I went back last week and she told me my right breast is denser than my left and very fibrocystic and told me she doesn't think its cancer but will give me a breast US for peace of mind. I went today and the US tech found a small shadow..7mm. It was very vague and kinda drifted in and out on the screen. She called in the radiologist and he also thought it was very vague. He told me that "it isn't worrisome" and is most likely a fibroadenoma. He wants me back in three months to check the progress. Soooo, with that all being said, can I assume that I am okay at this time?? I just need a second opinion. The radiologist told me "he doesn't want to go sticking me with needles just yet" and wants to see if it grows or stays the same. I have no family history of breast cancer, I might add.

Thanks for your time, I sincerely appreciate it!

Answer
With these symptoms and since you have a fibrocystic condition it is most probably a fibroadenoma. However I do not understand your radiologist's reluctance to "stick you with needles"! If that had been done then & there (under touch guidance or ultrasound guidance) a needle biopsy could already have shown us what this is with reasonable certainty and the matter would be closed! If in your shoes I would insist on it and demand it in order to be on the safe side! Why have to wait?
