Question Hello doctor,
My mother had undergone mastectomy on her left breast exactly one year ago. she has completed her chemotherapy cycles as well as radiation therapy and now on hormone pills. She went to see her doctor for regular check up few weeks back the doctor said she has some nodules formed on her mastectomy scars so they got her operated two days back and removed the nodules. She also had a port attached to her lower neck and shoulder region for chemotherapy. At the same spot the doctor said some fibrous cords are formed and they operated on that area as well 2 days back. my question is , is it common to get these nodules and fibrous cords after just one year of mastectomy?? and why are these nodules and fibrous cords formed? are they cancerous? is there anything that can be done for prevention of these nodule formation?
Answer They are probably not cancerous - but the surgical material (the tissue samples) should be checked by a pathologist to make sure that that is not the case. It is probably just scar tissue. Such things do happen now and then, a kind of exaggerated scar tissue.
