Breast Cancer/External Breast Expansion
Expert: Minas T Chrysopoulo, MD - 1/22/2010
QuestionDear Dr,
I had saline breast implants for 12 years. Had breast explant 1 1/2 years ago. I just felt it was time for them to come out. However I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis (I am 32) with no family history. Could the implants have contributed to this?
Also, one more question, I was looking into external tissue expansion of the breast (ie. Brava). Could that cause breast cancer?
I have tuberous breasts, no family history of breast cancer.
Kindest Regards,
Katie
AnswerKatie,
There are no studies that have shown a direct link between saline implants and osteoarthritis (OA) that I am aware of.
Occasionally larger, heavy breast implants can place extra stress on the neck and upper back which can cause pain. If you have xrays because of this pain you may well be diagnosed with early OA, particularly stage I arthritis. Many people in their early thirties have stage I osteoarthritis for a variety of reasons (without having had breast implants).
As for the external tissue expansion (Brava device) I have to say that I have no experience with it. According to the reports I have read, an increase of 1 cup size is a realistic expectation. However, in someone who has had implants removed, it is not going to tighten the skin if it is lax. There is no scientific evidence Brava causes or increases risk of breast cancer.
I hope that helps.
