Breast Cancer/about to have lumpectomy/radiation

Question
I have controlled asthma/emphysema using Spiriva, one oral spray daily (non steroid)..I have stage 1 breast cancer about to undergo lumpectomy followed by radiation.  I was told of the complications of lung problems, such as your comments.
Do you recommend I have a a mastectomy, instead of a lumpectomy for these complications? The last thing I need is breathing worse! Please respond. I thank you so much for bringing this problem to light.

Answer
Actually, while the choice is yours, I do recommend the lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy. The amount of radiation to your lung on the affected side is normally marginal. If I happened to be in your situation - and I am not only a cancer doctor but also a cancer patient (radiation therapy - my own choice - treated prostate cancer) - I would definitely choose the choice I have indicated. Mastectomy is not without its own possible complications. Good luck!
