Breast Cancer/Breast Lump

Question
Hello,

I'm a very healthy 27 year-old female (I eat well and exercise 5 days a week) with a history of breast cancer in my family.  In fact, at 20 years old, I had a fibroidadenoma removed from my left breast.  Shortly after, I got saline breast implants.

Earlier this week, I found a small lump in my right breast - above the implant.  It feels smooth and solid.  I called my doctor and made an appointment for Monday morning (today is Thursday), and I am very scared.

What should I expect at the visit?  Does the OBGYN usually perform an ultrasound or a biopsy at the vist, or will I have to see someone else?  I don't want to wait to find out what this is.  Also, if he chooses to do a mammogram, how will that work with my implants?

Also, two months ago I stopped taking birth control as my husband and I are planning to start a family soon ... could the change in hormone levels cause such a lump?  My period is days away as well, but I hae never experienced such changes in my breast.

Any advice or information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Melissa

Answer
The fact that your period is only days away may well be the cause of this lump. If so it is a result of hormonal changes and may well be a yet another fibroadenoma. But we do not KNOW that so I strongly suggest - as you have already anticipated - an examination by a doctor. The examination should include mammography (your implants will not disturb this much), ultrasound and perhaps also (if your breasts are very dense which is quite possible at your age) MRI breast scans. At least a needle biopsy of your lump should also be included. That can be done guided by ultrasound or by touch. Or guided by MRI or done stereotactically based on mammography. I do not know what equipment your doctor has. It is quite possible that some of this will have to be done elsewhere. If so that can not be helped. It is just as important that this is done well and right as it is that it is done fast! Good luck!
