Breast Cancer/U/S of Breast Findings

Question
QUESTION: Dear Doctor,

I recently underwent my first annaul mammogram which showed an area of question in the right brest. Upon further review via U/S, it was determined to be a morphologically unremarkable lymph node. The Radiologist identified an incidental finding which was a hypoechoic indeterminate lesion at the 11 o'clock 3B position measuring approximately 6x4x7 mm. Margins are slightly lobular and the echogenicity is mildly heterogenous. Limited color flow is seen entering at the level of the apex of this lesion. A biopsy was recommended which I had done yesterday. Of note, I have also had saline breast implants (approx 15 years ago)that were surgically inserted under the chest wall muscle through my armpits (no other incisions made). I have read many concerning things about an increased risk of breast cancer if you have a breast biopsy done. In your opinion, based on the above description, the fact I have no family hx of breast cancer, and am in very good health otherwise, what are the chances of this lesion being some form of carcinoma? Could this be some type of scar from my breast surgery 15 years ago?

ANSWER: That biopsies should increase your cancer risk is a myth without basis in reality! Well the reason why a biopsy has been done is to be SURE what your lesion is. So when the result is in we will KNOW what it is. But based on what you have written the risk of a cancer is probably very low. I doubt that what has been seen really is a scar.Good luck! Please keep me posted!

QUESTION: Thank you Dr - I am happy to report that the biopsy result was negative: "Benign breast lobules with mild chronic inflammation". The U/S technician did ask if I was sick or had been recently sick since the lymph nodes were inflamed a bit (which I do in fact have a mild chest cold/URI).Could this be some type of infection that is showing up on the dx mammo and U/S? Many thanks again!!

Answer
Thanks! Well it may be but is not certain. But what is certain is that it is not significant. What is significant is that the findings were benign. So there was nothing to worry about! Good luck! Take care!
