Breast Cancer/continuing brown nipple discharge

Question
I expressed some brown/rust discharge from my left nipple last November.  A smear test of the of the nipple fluid found atypical cells.  A small cyst was aspirated near my nipple at 12:00, no other palpable mass, but many enlarged ducts.  I will have a follow up exam in 6 months, but my breast surgeon insisted that I let him know if there are any changes before then--he suggested "If in a month, you are still seeing the discharge, give me a call."

My questions, if the cyst has caused the issue, should the discharge stop when the cyst is aspirated? (I have expressed the same discharge once since it was aspirated just over a month ago--I've only tried once...)

Also, what else could cause the atypical cells with no palpable mass?  Thank you in advance.

Answer
I doubt that your cyst was responsible for this condition. I do suggest a galactogram of the breast in question (a mammography with x-ray contrast injected into the milk duct that produces your discharge). If anything abnormal is seen there a surgical biopsy of that area should be done! These things are probably what your doctor has in mind. Good luck!
