Breast Cancer/Male breast mass

Question
QUESTION: Hello. Just had a mammogram and a referral to a surgeon, but the doctors don't seem to be moving forward very quickly. I'm a 53 year old male.  Wondering how worried I should be, and should I push for further testing? The mammogram report is as follows:   "slight subareolar fibroglandular tissue bilaterally with more on right than left. No discrete mass is present and there is no architectural distortion.  There are no calcifications identified."  Can you help me understand this report please?

ANSWER: The x-ray picture supports the impression that this is a piece of glandular-fibrous tissue which is NOT uncommon and is NOT a cancer. Breast cancer is not unheard of in males but is VERY rare. To be completely sure what it is I do suggest a needle biopsy. I see no big reason for alarm! Good luck!

QUESTION: Hello again, and thank you for your response.  What is the significance of "architectural distortion" and "calcifications"? Are these indicators of something one way or another?

Answer
Such distortion could be a sign of malignancy. Calcifications of certain kinds are also associated with malignancy. So those indications of malignancy are not present. So again no reason to be alarmed!
