Breast Cancer/Recent Diagnosis

Question
Dear Claes-Gustaf Nordquist,
I have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. I am 48 years old. So far I believe that the lump has been there about 1 year.  I understand that it is about 3.5 cm in size and it is an infiltrating duct carcinoma that has reached the axillary lymph node on my right side.

I have been given the following treatment suggestion:
Chemotherapy - (to try to shrink tumor to allow for lumpectomy versus mastectomy)
Surgery
Radiation

Can I ask you if you can give me your opinion on if there are any disadvantages to doing the chemo first - as I understand it is surgery is normally done first.

Do you agree with this treatment plan?

Lastly, can you tell me if, as a possible option - if there are any recent or new procedures or treatments that are less invasive than described above?

Answer
That is a treatment plan I can fully support. If surgery was done first your whole breast HAD TO be removed! If this plan works (no promises) ONLY your tumor has to be removed. There is NO less invasive possibility at present! If my mother or sister or wife or daughter had your problem I would support this plan. I think that says all! Good luck! P.S. Probably more chemotherapy will be needed AFTER the procedure described above!
