Breast Cancer/breast calcifications

Question
Hi, I am a 41 yo F. I had a breast reduction recently on one side to correct an asymmetry I developed during breastfeeding. The path report of the specimen said that the tissue was benign fibrocystic changes with calcifications. I have never had a mammo, in Canada they recommend after 40. I have read that pattern and distribution of calcifications could be an early sign of CA. Should I be concerned. I am a little anxiuos becasue I have always associated calcifications with malignancy.

Answer
Calcifications may be associated with malignancy but they do not have to be. In this case your breast tissues were checked by a pathologist and no signs of cancer were found. So at least with these calcifications there was no such association. But I do suggest that you start doing mammographies together with at least ultrasound breast scans and if your fibrocystic breast tissue changes disturb the evaluation of your mammographies also MRI breast scans. If any unclear lesions are found at least needle biopsies should be done. Good luck!
