Breast Cancer/breast cancer screening

Question
Dear Dr. Nordquist,
I am a 41 year old female.  My mother developed breast cancer at age 60 (She has been cancer free for over 10 years).
Two years ago I began annual mammograms at Toronto's premiere cancer centre/hospital.  Everything has been fine so far.
Last week I asked my family physician whether it was safe to have annual mammograms, and how often I should be screened.  He suggested putting off my third mammogram scheduled for this February, and referring to one this hospital's doctors, for her opinion and check-up.  I agreed, although I don't currently have any problems.
My question is twofold.  Is the radiation in annual mammograms starting at age 40 safe (my doctor didn't address this), and if this specialist suggests getting tested for the BRCA genes, should I do it??
My mother's paternal aunt had breast cancer as well, but she, my mother and I all have no sisters - so I'm wondering if this is something the hospital may suggest - the thought of being tested for this really scares me.
Thank you in advance for your answer!
Valerie.

Answer
Well, radiation is radiation. However if we consider the risk/benefit situation in your case it is quite evident that with your family history the rather small risks associated with mammography in your case are well worth it since it is a good method to find breast cancer early! Why is such a gene test scary? If it is suggested - which is not certain - your doctor most probably considers it important. In that case it probably IS important in order to evaluate your situation. Such an evaluation is to your own advantage! So it should not be scary! Good luck!
