Breast Cancer/Asymmetric density in right breast

Question
I had my first mammogram 2 weeks ago (I am 45 - no history of breast cancer or any cancer in my family)

The report came back as follows: Fibroglandular tissue in Asymmetric fashion...Asymmetric density is present in the medial right breast

I had a follow up mammogram last week of the right breast only.  At the office the technician told me the doctor said to come back in 6 months to check for changes.  The doctor did not come in and talk to me. And the technician basically said it was nothing to be concerned about - and since they did not have a previous mammogram to compare it to - that I need to come back in 6 months to check for changes. But that "alarms" me.

The report was just faxed to me saying:
Probably benign. Recommend repeat right mammogram in 6 months.  (Probable right breast asymmetry)

Findings:  Right focal compression CC and mediolateral views are compared to April 16, 2007. Asymmetric density descried on previous exam is less apparent on todays study.

Well I have been extremely concerned.  Do I need to be proactive and go to a specialist for a second opinion - or is this something that is truly common and not to be worried about? Is this something that uaually turns into cancer?  I am frustrated that the doctor did not come in and talk to me.  I do not want to give something that could turn into cancer 6 months to change.

Thank you for your opionion!

Answer
What was seen was only some difference in the density of the inner parts of your breasts with somewhat higher density on the right hand side. This is certainly not uncommon (very few people are perfectly symmetrical all over). The second time the difference was not so clear. Obviously you have rather dense breasts with prominent fibroglandular tissues. This is not anything abnormal and the only problem with it is that it makes a cancer lesion more difficult to detect in such dense breasts. In order to make that easier and less problematic INSIST on having both ultrasound breast scans and MRI breast scans together with the mammography next time. The only reason why they want to do it again in 6 months is the fact that your breasts are somewhat difficult to examine due to the causes described above! So I see no real reason for you to worry! But I agree this should have been explained to you already in the clinic!

Thanks! Your breast condition is under hormonal influence and that probably explains the 2 different results.
