Breast Cancer/Pathology Report

Question
I have a pathology report from a needle core biopsy that states:  mildly-proliferative fibrocystic change without atypia, showing apocrine metaplasia, cyst formation, and adenosis, with associated luminal microcalcifications.  What does this mean?  The doctor said it was not cancer, but does it suggest my risk for cancer is increased.  Treatment suggested was only a followup mammogram in one year.  Is that sufficient?  Thanks

Answer
This is indeed NOT a cancer, NOR is it a precursor to cancer! But of course NOR is it in ANY way a guarantee that you will NOT develop breast cancer some time in the future! So future check ups should be done. Yes I think the suggested course is enough, even better if mammography is complemented with ultrasound & MRI breast scans! Good luck!
