Breast Cancer/abnormal mammogram and follow-up

Question
Hi-

I had a mammogram come back that there was an asymmetrical area in my right breast and I followed up with additional films and an ultrasound.  This came back that I had abnormal, asymmetrical tissue (I think) with cystic lesions, at least 6, the largest being 3.5 cm.  They wanted me to follow-up with an MRI to rule out neoplasm (?).  My doctor referred me to a surgeon specializing in breast surgery.  Needless to say I'm freaked out and it's Friday night.  Should I be worried.  No one at my doctor's office seemed to know what the follow-up report meant.  The doctor and the surgeon I was referred to were out of the office.  I' not sure what it all means.  Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

Answer
You should follow it up with an MRI scan since that will in this situation give a better picture than mammography & ultrasound together. You should also have at least a needle biopsy of the area to get a pathology/cytology diagnosis in order to be completely on the safe side. But probably (though no guarantees are possible) this is a case of fibrocystic breast condition which is not dangerous.
