Question
I am 36 years old.  I have a breast lump in the right breast at 10 oclock.  My armpit on the same side is quite swollen and has been that way for a while.  My mammo results show asymmetric density in both breasts.  There is a dominant mass in the right breast inferior and laterally 20 x 30 mm.  There are some lymph nodes in the axilla bilaterally.  My u/s results show the lesion is demonstrated.  It has a mixed echo pattern measuring a maximum of 27 x 12 mm on ultrasound.  There is a portion of the lesion that has a solid component.  There are two separate cystic areas within it one 5 x 8 mm and one 6 x 4 mm.  Birads 4

Can you please explain these results.  I am scheduled to see a surgeon on friday.  Thank you!
Karen

Answer
Well you have a palpable mass in your right breast and a swelling in the armpit on the same side. If I have understood what you have told me about your mammography report correctly it probably shows signs of a fibrocystic breast condition but a cancer among these breast densities can not be excluded. The ultrasound report more or less shows the same thing. There is a significant risk of a breast cancer. Why was not an MRI breast scan done?! In such dense breasts such a scan is important! The important thing now is to check your lesions by biopsy - for example by needle biopsy. By doing that we should know what these lesions really are and knowing that we can decide what to do  - if anything.
