Breast Cancer/recurring breast cancer

Question
A friend of mine has been diagnosed with recurring breast
cancer, in less than 6 months from treatment for the initial
phase. The cancer has shown up in her lung. She is 40 and the
mother of young children. I have read that recurring breast
cancer that has metastisized has about a 20% surivial rate over 5
years. What statistics do you have to share ... anything different?
Any new research? Any new experimental treatments that show
high promise? Any hope? I would appreciate hearing from you.

Answer
Unfortunately I do not have that much to offer! The statistics you quote are about correct. Since her cancer has already spread a cure seems out of the question. Also this quick appearence of a daughter tumour is certainly not a good sign. Of course new discoveries and inventions may become available - like the recent report with regards to immunotherapy of malignant melanoma. But it will be many years until such methods are developed for breast cancer and in general use. That does not mean that nothing can be done. Various methods of therapy can be used in a case like this, including chemo therapy and (anti) hormonal therapy. But most of them have side effects - some even severe - and at best they can just prolong the process and maybe give some relief of symptoms. Dear Colleague, I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
