Breastfeeding - baby's appitite seems to be slowing down

Expert: Melanie Horrocks - 4/30/2008

Question
hello my name is amanda and im having a problem for the past week and a half, my 2 month old daughter has seem to have lost her appitite.the once star pupil of breastfeeding has now developed a lack of appitite.she used to have a steady feeding of 10 min on each breast. i burp her before switching breast and change her as well.she does suck on the pacifier and has a bit of thrush which is being medicated(doesnt seem to bother her). i went to the doctors about this and they didnt seem too concerned saying her wet diapers was a good indication that she was getting enough milk. i wasnt satisfied but what could i say? then we went to the doctors again b/c i thought her fontanelle was a bit sunken in. i got the same response as before.im at my wits end because a mother always notices a slight change in her child. no one seems to take me seriously and i dont want my child to be suffering.please help

Answer
Hi Amanda,

Please try not to worry. What you are experiencing could be that she is in a little discomfort with the thrush. I will post a link to the best leflet on thrush, as you both need to be treated, which a lot of doctors miss:

However, what you may be experiencing is just a natural side effect of your lo growing up. Babies get more efficient at feeding, and so their feeds get quicker as well as reducing in number. This seems scary at first, but is also normal.

The Doctor was right to look at wet nappies - plenty of wet nappies is a sign of a well hydrated baby. There will also be slight changes in her fontanelle. As long as she is alert and seems happy and bright I wouldn't worry about a slight change. If it is pronounced, and she seems not herself then obviously go to the doctor.

I hope this reassures you a little

love

Mel xx
