Question
My son is 6 months old and has been nursing great ever since he was born. We have been using Baby Wise techniques and he slept through the night since he was 10 weeks old. I have had a lot of problems with clog milk ducts and an abundant milk supply but have seemed to have gotten that all under control. A week and 1/2 ago i started introducing rice cereal after his second nursing feeding. he has done great and really loved it. (Can't say i love the poopy diapers) On Sat, today is mon, i started feeding him rice cereal after feedings 1,2,&3...so about 7-8am, 11am, 2:30ish pm. I always breastfeed him first, because i know that that is where he will get most of his nutrients, and then feed him 3-4 tbs of rice cereal mixed with breast milk. Sat night he would only take one boob and then screamed when i tried offering the other. he slept through the night just fine but the sunday he ate 2 boobs at his first feeding, then his second feeding he would only eat off one.  And from then on he is only eating off one boob for a very short amount of time and then i have to pump the other breast. And if it was feeding 1-3 totally gobbled up his rice cereal. I have tried offering him a bottle after one boob but he won't take it.  I am concerned that he is not getting enough breast milk, and that b/c of my abundant milk supply that i am going to start getting clogged again. Please help. I was thinking about pumping before i breast feed him and give him that bottle so i know he is getting enough, but that means that I am attached to the pump 5 times a day. I was also thinking to not feed him so much rice at a time and only twice a day and see what happens. Is it possible that he is getting enough milk off one boob for a short amount of time??? But if so how do i detach from the pump??? Am i feeding him too much cereal??? help!! i love breastfeeding but I am coming to the end of my rope.

Answer
Hi Martha,

My honest answer is that I would spread out the solids a little, and probably even reduce the number of times I offered the solids to maybe once a day, increasing after 2-3 weeks to twice. There is no need to go so suddenly to 3 meals a day.

Your supply will adjust to a gradual reduction in nursing as you gradually increase solids, but this sounds a little rapid to me, especially as you have such an abundant supply.

I hope that reassures you a little

love

Mel xxx
