Question I breast fed my 1st child for about 11 months in 2006 and recently just had a baby boy 2008, they are only 1yr and 5 months apart. I am tired and need to go back to work due to financial reasons...I'm just not sure how to go about it..I am currently feeding Jack now and supplementing formula and he takes it fine..I just feel really bad for stopping and there's some sort of connection when your breastfeeding that just feels so reassuring. I could never really explain how feels really sweet, to know that your making your baby happy and strong and just to see they grow from you...well..I guess I'm just really emotional. (sorry) I've only been breastfeeding for about a month and a week...and could you give advice of what I should do???
thanks, Sandra
Answer Hi Sandra,
I am sorry that this is a hard time for you. Breastfeeding can be very emotional in many ways. Hopefully I can help a little.
I have re-read your question and I am not sure exactly what you are asking me. I think you need to know what to do when you go back to work with breastfeeding. You have many options available, here are a few:
1. Many women still continue to breastfeed even when they go back to work. You can rent or buy a really good electric pump (with double kits to pump both breasts at the same time) and pump while you are at work to maintain your milk supply. Then, you can feed your baby at the breast when you are home.
2. Remember that any amount of breastmilk is beneficial. So, if you decide to supplement during the day while at work, you can still nurse your baby at night. Your breasts work on a supply/demand system. As much milk as you take out of your breasts, that is the same amount your breasts will continue to produce. So, you may not have a great milk supply feeding so infrequently, but it will still give you the bonding time with your baby.
3. You can breastfeed as much as you can when you are home and supplement the rest.
4. If you decide to pump and go back to work, I recommend pumping every morning on the opposite breast that you feed your baby. You can then store this milk in the freezer. That way, when you go back to work, you will have plenty of milk stored up for your baby. Breastmilk can last in the freezer about 3-5 months and in a deep freezer up to 1 year.
5. Working women are among some of the most successful breastfeeders. If you still want to nurse and work, you can. You simply pump and store the milk to use when you go to work. If you feel that you need to supplement and stop, you can. You are the only one who will know what is best for you right now. Two little babies takes a lot of time. All of my children are 2 years apart and it is busy. As women, we can sometimes feel guilty for the decisions that we make. Just remember, you are the one who knows what is best for you.
You are a good mom, Sandra. I can tell you really care about your little ones. I wish you the best of luck. If you have more questions about going back to work and pumping, please let me know.
