Breastfeeding - returning to work/continue breastfeeding

Expert: Melanie Horrocks - 6/5/2008

Question
Hi,  I have a daughter of 10 1/2 years old, and I am returning to work when she will be 12 months old.  I plan to continue breastfeeding whenever possible, morning(before 8 am), when I return from work (5 pm) and evenings/ night.
My first question is, will that be enough milk for her...  not being breastfed all day?  Should she also be drinking 3.2% milk during the day?
My second question is, will I still be producing enough milk since I won't be breast feeding all day?
thank you,
Patrizia

Answer
Hi Patrizia,

that will be fine, absolutely fine! I presume she is on solid foods and drinks water and/or cows milk. I returned to work when my son was 12 mths and this worked really well. It will work equally well at around six months, so you will be fine.

Your milk supply will be fine as your supply will be so established by now, it will adapt really easily. I don't know if you use breast pads, but even if not, use them for the first few days when you go back just in case!

Good luck

love

Mel xxxx
