Breastfeeding - reduced milk supply

Expert: ruth kraft - 10/14/2009

Question
I am exclusively breastfeeding my 11 week old daughter. It took a couple of weeks for my milk to come in fully so that I would have enough for her to get a full meal each feeding, but after those first 2 weeks or so, my breast milk came in pretty well and I was able to get at least 2 oz. from each breast and sometimes up to 4 oz. from each. Then we got a cold and she started eating less and I was pumping and feeding her less for about a week. Ever since then my milk supply has gone down dramatically and I can't get it back no matter how much I pump or how much water or milk I drink. I'm worried my milk supply will dry up and I am having less milk to feed her so she's not getting enough to satisfy her. I really don't want to give her formula, what can I do to get my milk supply back? If it does keep drying up, does that mean i will stop producing and I can't get it back?

Answer
you can try mothers milk tea, and or fenugreek capsules to increase supply. but just keep nursing her , she will build it back up. remember also that she is much more efficent at getting milk from you than the pump. So keep nursing her and she will build up to what she needs. You shouldnt have to give her formula.  Try those few things and it should be fine :)
