I have been pumping every 3-4 hours for the past four weeks. Over the past week and a half, the breast milk production on my left breast has decreased dramatically. Now, over the past two days, I have noticed a hard, painful lump in the areola area of that breast. It is very painful to pump now, and I get severe pain (sharp/ shooting pain) throughout that breast after I pump. I have tried warm showers and warm compresses with no relief. Any thoughts?

I don't know how far postparum you are, however it could be a few things. The sharp shooting pains after feeding makes me think it is a yeast infection. The lump makes me think either a clogged duck or mastitus but that usually isnt right in the aerola although it can be. My suggestion would be to get to a Lactation consultant as soon as you can. If you are postpartum ( I assume you are since you said pumping for 3-4 weeks ) then it might be covered free where you delivered. Le leache leage also gives free advice but this is something that would need to be assessed in person I think as I can't give you a definite cause by the few symtoms listed.
