Questionhi.. i was a breastfeeding mother up until my son was 10 1/2months old. he was an ox. he was 9lbs 10oz.
what is your opinion on breastfeeding and taking medication?
can a parent (mother) be depressed and raise a child? even if on medication?
Answerhello ;) Good job on nursing for 10.5 months! You can check the safety of your medication at www.safefetus.com. Most medications are fine with breastfeeding, so yes, I think it is fine as long as it isnt one that is very detrimental. You can ABSOLUTLY take depression medication and nurse. if you are prescribed something that isnt breastfeeding safe, then ask for a nother medication that is. I know there are plenty out there that are fine. Yes, a mother can be depressed and raise a child. However, I strongly urge you to get the resources you need to work on the depression as it will effect your child as the baby will grow and think that its normal for women to be depressed or people in general. and you wont be able to fully experience the bliss of having a little baby and child. If medication is needed, then by all means get medications. but I most strongly urge you to seek guidence of a good therapist if needed. If you struggle finding one close to you that you can see I know people who will do phone counceling as well. It is a very important component of wellness. You are NOT crazy, sometimes, we just need help moving through things, and learning to ask for help from others is NOT a bad thing. Just like you are doing now.
I hope that helped.
