Breastfeeding/breastfeeding while having PUPPP?
Expert: ruth kraft - 4/16/2009
QuestionI got PUPPP just recently and tried different creams to help but nothing is working will i be able to breastfeed having the rash on me?
AnswerOkay after consulting with my resources they also say that they sees no contradiction with Pupps rash and breastfeeding. They will give you a steroid to clear it up and that is perfectly fine to take while nursing. You might want to check any meds they give you through Dr. Hale and call a lactation consultant to have her look it up and make sure its breastfeeding friendly. usually the meds are what contradicts rather than the pupps itself which seems to be something that will go away after the birth. Sometimes it takes longer than others. but often is , even without meds, can go away on its own after delivery. but if meds are needed, check their contraindications.
More info I got from LLL, thought I'd go ahead and pass it along.
From ?Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession? by Lawrence & Lawrence, 6th edition, 2005, page 612:
?PUPP syndrome (puritic urticaria papules and plaques of pregnancy) is the most common dermatosis of pregnancy (1 in 200 patients). Cause is unknown but no hormonal or autoimmune abnormalities have been found. It is more common in primigravidas with prominent striae and uterine distention (twins, hydramnios). Lesions typically begin on abdomen as erythmatous papules surrounded by a narrow pale halo that coalesce into urtical paques. It spreads to thighs and arms in 2 to 3 days. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy to distinguish from gestationis. Treatment is symptomatic. It is not contagious or infectious. Breastfeeding is appropriate. Lesions on the breast will have to be evaluated, but the disease does fade post partum.
