Breastfeeding - Pain on right breast and red sore on nipple

Expert: ruth kraft - 6/30/2009

Question
I have always had trouble breastfeeding on my right breast, it always is more sore, but lately  more pain and have noticed a red sore on nipple that hasn't gone away for about a week.  My right breast also is smaller, seems as though not as much milk on that side.  My 11 week son has always preferred the left side.  When he nurses, I never have pain or problems with that side.  But, with right side, it hurts as soon as he latches on.  Pain seems like it is coming from the bottom of the nipple, deep stinging pain.  The pain stays while he is sucking.  I didn't think anything of it and just thought he has problems with this side, but now the pain comes and goes throughout the day.  I then thought it was just let down, b/c I never really experience that either.  But, I never have the same feeling on the other side.  I am confused.  Sorry for the long question.

Answer
don't worry about the question being long. in breastfeeding , often the more detail the better. first off, its normal for a baby to prefer one side than another and it usually is the side thats bigger :) all babies do that :)  and secondly, although I cannot diagnose , it sounds to me almost textbook that you have yeast in your breast...  all the symptoms you have suggest yeast all around. even if the baby doesnt show signs of thrush, it doesnt mean you both dont have it. Why it is only in one breast, no one can know. it might be in both you just have more symptoms in one. SO, you have 2 options, you can go and get a consult from a lactation consultant who can diagnose, then go to your pediatrician and get nystatin for you and the baby ( you MUST treat both you and the baby to get rid of it or it wont really go away )  or if that isnt an option because of money issues, then go online and search remedies for yeast. You can drink and use topically coconut oil, or genetian violet, boil all your bras and any bottles and pacifiers that are used, take probiotics, and quite a few other things to help it go away. Some things like diflucan you need a rx for but others you can do over the counter. Each one works depending on the person taking it. However , manage it as quick as you can because if you dont, yeast grow rapidly and get ALOT worse. and you and baby could be miserable...

good luck!
