Breastfeeding/No period after being done breastfeeding for some time

Question
I breastfed my 2 1/2 year old for approx 22 months. I have been done breastfeeding for approx 8 months now. I haven't had a full period since he was born. I got some spotting afterward but that is about it.

It has been three months now that I haven't had any sort of menstruation. I am on oral contraceptives and I have taken a pregnancy test twice that has come up negative.

My question is, is it normal to not get a period after being done breastfeeding for this long? Should I be concerned?

Dear Lisa,

First, congratulations for giving your son the best start in life by breastfeeding him!

As far as your periods are concerned, every woman is different regarding when her menstruation resumes, as I explain in my book (see below). It's not that uncommon for it to take up to a year. Also, some oral contraceptives suppress menstruation, so it's likely that this combination is responsible for your lack of periods.

However, I would suggest that you go to see your obstetrician just to check things out. Probably the doctor will reassure you that everything is fine and that your periods will resume in due course. Meanwhile, you are probably fertile, so you're wise to use contraception if you don't want to conceive at this time.
