Breastfeeding - low milk supply

Expert: ruth kraft - 7/5/2009

Question
I just had my baby on June 23, I am almost 2 weeks postpartum and I have barely no milk supply and have not had a supply since delivery.  I started breastfeeding in the delivery room and continued until I left the hospital.  When I got home I realized the baby was not having enough wet or dirt diapers and realized he had lost weight.  We began supplementing per Dr's orders, but I really want to solely breastfeed my baby.  I am very emotional about this because it is something that is very important to me.  I have talked to a la leche league person and am in contact with a lactation consultant.I am currently taking fenugreek pills and some milkmaid tea but have not really noticed a difference.  I am feeding the baby every 2 hours and trying to pump after every feeding  When I do pump with a Medela double electric breastpump I only get drops each time.  The baby's latch on is good and baby seems to be sucking okay.  This has been so frustrating and disappointing to me.  I am just wondering if this is a common issue and if I can or will be able to solely breastfeed.  Any information on this would be helpful or anything that worked for others.  Also my breast are not full and I do not feel a let down, if I squeeze them milk does come out though.  Sorry for rambling on hopefully you will have some helpful information.

Thank you
Erin

Answer
There is also a medication called reglan your doctor might be able to give you, it is weird to me with all that you havent gotten any milk yet. I would bump up pumping to every hour, nurse every other. pump both breasts 15 minutes. and feed the baby every 2 hours, feed the baby any supplimental formula through a SNS system ( as your lactation consultant for that ) and I would also have the lactation consulatant check the latch and also that palet of the baby again.  just to cover  all bases.
If you are getting drops, you can get more so that is good. you just have to stimulate the breasts enough to know baby is wanting more and more and more...

good luck!
