Question
hi ruth!
how are you? im abhie and i am a new mom, my baby was born in may 27 2009 and weigh 3.475 pounds. she is 6wks now and gaining 400 grms every week. i am not worried bout her weight but she keeps spitting up after feeds. i am breasfeeding her and making sure she is getting enough. she feeds every 3hrs and always right on schedule. it just when she feeds she would seem like choking and will cry for abit. then would suck again, she will suck for 15 to 25 mins in one breast and would look content. after that she will go to sleep happy. i am concern bout the spitting up continously. she also had an ultrasound for diagnosis of pyloric stenosis and all they found on her was her tummy was full of air bubbles. so hope you can answer my question. God bless and thank you.

Answer
Every baby is born with reflux. and the earlier the baby, the more the reflux is prevalant. Becuase she is gaining weight, then there is no reason for the concern about the spitting up. Over time it sho uld get better as those valves strengthen, since anything serious has been ruled out, you are pretty good to go. Thickening her feeds rarly actually helps spitting up so don't listen to advice from friends etc to add rice ceral with milk before she is 6 months old. It is harder on her digestive track. Mylicon drops are drops used that you can get over the counter that help reduce air bubbles in the stomach. Give it to her about 15 minutes before each feed and that might help some. Burp frequently and put her in an upright reclined posistion for a half hour after each feed. like a car seat , bouncy seat or in your arms :)

I hope that helped!
