Breastfeeding/Mucus and blood in baby's stool
Expert: ruth kraft - 8/17/2009
QuestionMy baby is 6 1/2 months old. she is exclusively breast-feed. She started having mucus and blood in her stool when she was 1 1/2 months old. As time when by the bright red blood and mucus became more frequent and a lot more in quantity, while she gains the minimum weight. SHe weights 14 lb. 10 oz now. The GI suggested that I give up milk, wheat, eggs, soy, all nuts and fish for about 2 months now but there is no change in her stool. I am very concerned at this point. Other then the poor weight gain she is happy and has reached all the milestones so far. Are there tests that could be done? What else could it be other then food allergies? I feel like i am nursing her and she gets sick from what i feed her. Despite my desperate efforts to give her a hypoallergenic formula she wouldn't drink it. i feel really stuck and desperate..Thanks in advance for your answer

AnswerThe formula often will make things worse, wether its hypoalergenic or not... breastmilk is always the best choice... I am not sure what could be causeing the blood in the stool as I am not a doctor, now can I diagnose, but I would suggest trying to get some pro biotics at a health food store. you can get them over the counter ( acidopholus ) you can take it yourself, and also get some for her. Speak to the people there and see what would be best for you to take. This will help get your gut back into shape and hopefully help the babies as well and see what happens. \
Good luck!
