Breastfeeding/return of menses after weaning

Question
Ruth,
I completely stopped using my breast pump 5 months ago, and for the last month of pumping I only pumped once a day.  I thought that with the very slow weaning process, I would have gotten my period by now.  My doctor said I should come in if I get to the sixth month without a period.  I don't have cramps or any signs that my period is going to return.  Is this normal?  Could something be wrong with me?

Answer
Hello, You can always follow up with your doctor,if you have a great concern, but its very common for women to take longer than average to get this back. Depending on how long your body takes to get back to "normal". Every woman does things differently but if you are trying to get pregnant, you can always have your doctor give you medications to help start things going again. But also know that when you introduce hormones to your body that arent natural it can sometimes wreak havoc on a system trying to balance itself. So if possible, then let your body balance itself :)
