Breastfeeding/fat content in breastmilk

Question
Hello,
I was wondering if there was a way to determine if my breast milk contains enough fat.  I am currently nursing my 6-month-old, and her doctor told me she is in the 3rd percentile for weight, and I should supplement with formula.  I do not want to use formula, and deplete my milk supply, so I have added 2 more feedings to her day, and am feeding her avocados for more fat.  I feel like I am producing adequate milk, but wonder if the milk is fatty enough.  My other two children were also small at that age- maybe it just runs in the family.  Any ideas?
Thank you for your time,
Sara

Answer
There is no real way to find out about the actual fat content of the milk. It would be fruitless anyway as breastmilk changes every day based on what your baby needs. If your daughter has not LOST weight, and she is developmentally where she needs to be, then there is nothing wrong. She is doing what she is suppose to. As you stated also that your other children were small as well, it is most likely genetics. If she is having 6 wet diapers a day, she is getting enough. My suggestion would be that you can get a second opinion if you want to ease your mind. All pediatricians should KNOW that breastmilk has more calories and FAR more nutrition than formula will ever dream of. Also  Keeping in mind that it is NOT important where on the growth chart your child falls. but that she continues to develop normally, and continues to grow. the growth chart only is useful to see if there are sudden declines in weight. The percentage has little to do with the childs health at all.

I hope that helps!
