Breastfeeding/Spitting up

Question
Hi Ruth.  I have a 3 month old.  I am exclusively breast feeding.  He nurses every 3 to 4 hours based on his sleep schedule.  Around 4 weeks old he began to spit up or vomit alot.  Even up to 2 hours after feeding.  I was extremely concerned because it seemed like at times he was spitting up everything he ate.  He is growing well, has a normal number of wet and dirty diapers and seems to have no discomfort when spitting up.  The Doc said to cut him off and break the feedings up into 3 to 4 intervals.  Currently he feed for 5-8 mins on each side.  We try to keep him sitting up for about an hour after each feeding.  He is still spitting alot.  Any ideas why are suggestions we can employ?

Thanks!

Zahra

Answer
If the spitting still doesn't bother him, then don't worry about it. Some babies are just spitters. It is a weak valve in there that gets stronger over time. As long as he is gaining there is no need to worry. just alot of cleanup unfortunately. But often , we are doing our babies a favor by letting them grow and mature instead of adding medications to fix a problem that isnt really a problem and can cause more problems in the long run. AS long as he is thriving, feed him when he wants to eat and watch in amazement that you have more food than he needs :)
