Answer
Congratulations! Breastfeeding your baby is a wonderful way to feed him or her. Breastfeeding is a natural process, and it shouldn't be painful. Since you're experiencing pain, you may need to try a different way to hold your baby or a different latch.

Have you tried to nurse in a laid back position? Many people have found this helps to get a proper latch and doesn't hurt. Here is a good article on proper positioning from La Leche League: http://www.llli.org/faq/positioning.html.

It also may be painful if your baby is not getting enough of your breast tissue in her mouth. You want to make sure baby is taking a big "bite" so that she's getting the milk ducts to release milk and not just feeding from the nipple.

Breast size isn't usually a problem - woman with all different sizes and shapes of breasts can successfully breastfeed. You just have to find the position that works best for you and your baby. It takes a little practice, but you will both become experienced and successful in your breastfeeding relationship.

If your breasts are enlarged because you have milk engorgement - something that does happen around that time - you can try to pump or manually express milk before she tries to nurse. Engorgement can prevent baby from getting a good latch too. Here's a great article about engorgement and what you can do: http://www.llli.org/faq/engorgement.html

I would also encourage you to get in touch with a local La Leche League Leader if possible! They can be a great resource.

Expertise

As a mother who has exclusively breastfed, pumped and supplemented with formula I have run into many issues with breastfeeding. I have extended my breastfeeding knowledge through coursework as a postpartum doula and with La Leche League. I can answer questions about breastfeeding, how to breastfeed, common issues that occur with breastfeeding, struggles with breastfeeding and offer resources for ideas to increase milk supply, troubleshoot breastfeeding issues and also resources to find what medications may or may not be safe for breastfeeding.

Experience

I have breastfeed one son for a 27 months and am currently breastfeeding my second son. I have also taken coursework as a postpartum doula and have attended La Leche League.
