Hi I am in the same boat with an 8 mo old allergic to dairy and soy and I am breastfeeding. I took her to an allergist and he said I could still eat things cooked/baked with milk but to avoid true dairy products - milk, ice cream, yogurt, etc.
I am taking calcium supplements instead (vitamins or Viactiv).
I really doubt its the vanilla, its probably the milk protein or lactose. You can test if you take your baby to an allergist - they can do a skin prick test and find out within 5-10 min. - this gives you a simple yes/no answer. They can also do a blood test that gives you the allergic reaction on a scale of 0/1 to 6.
