Thanks for the info Tanya...I am having the same problem nursing my 16 month old. The link to the baby center page is disappointing to me, however. Basically they recommend you stop nursing if you have the sores on your nipples and that supplementing with formula is the best option. We are vegan and I am really committed to providing breastmilk for my son, particularly now since he's not eating a lot (due to the sores in and around his mouth). Not to mention he's a breastfed toddler and is very needy right now for comfort feedings (we've also gotten a cold and he's been up all night every hour or two). I'm using a natural product called Super Lysine which counters too much Arginine in the diet (appparently this can lead to cold sore outbreaks, as well as colds/flus/stress/lowered immune system) Anyway,...it's been very painful to nurse but I feel it's worth it for my son. And cold sores only last 10 days or so. I had a hard time finding any information out there to support nursing through it (even from La Leche League)so I just wanted to share my experience.
