Breastfeeding - milk allergy and breastfeeding

Expert: Samantha Brunner - 10/19/2006

Question
My 7 month old has been recently diagnosed with a milk allergy after having a taste of Grandma's Ice cream.  He has been breastfed since day one and has never shown any adverse reaction to my breast milk even on my high dairy diet(I probably drank a gallon of milk weekly during this time plus cheese on everything).  After he had the reaction to the ice cream I have been told to try to cut out dairy from my diet.  If he had no reaction to my breastmilk before, Is it going to hinder his outgrowing the allergy if I continue to eat dairy products?
How is the best way for him to get his Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids after 1 yr old if he can't have whole milk products?

Answer
Dana, I would say that his grandma's ice cream probably just had a much higher lactose content than your breastmilk.  So I would recommend that if you never has problems before just keep doing what your doing.  He needs the Vitamin D in your diet for healthy brain developemnt, especially if he won't be able to drink regular milk later on.  But as long as he has no reaction to you, just keep on nursing and eating as normal!  It could have also been something else in the ice cream other than the dairy part.  Was it flavored?  Even Vanilla ice cream has flavor, vanilla beans and such that could have caused this reaction.
I hope this helps.
Samantha
